How this blog can change your life:

  • Six degrees of Sustainability is for everyone who wants to be part of the solution to our environmental crisis and stop contributing to our fossil-fuel based, car-centered, throwaway economy. It's an open courseware resource and a guided journey into the most important concepts in sustainability today. For the year 2008, I will post two lessons each week on hot topics that get you personally involved through experiential learning, exercises and research. I'll be doing everything with you, because this is also my journey.

About me

  • Two years ago I was an art critic in Manhattan, documenting the Caligulan decadence of the contemporary art world, and pretty unbothered by humanity's biggest crisis. After several Eureka! moments about the state of the environment catalyzed by Al Gore, William McDonough and Janine Benyus (see the reading list at right) I'm now on a quest to learn and teach everything I can about sustainability and how we can permanently transform our trash-and-burn way of living.

You don't need a PhD

  • in environmental science or a 5-star resume to work for the massive change that we need now. You just need to tap your own natural resourcefulness and stay dedicated to the vision of a greener world. Whether you want to shift your career in a sustainable direction, become an activist, or learn how to live a greener life, this site can help (and without all the student loans)!

How to use the site

  • Check back each week for two lessons and learning exercises on hot topics. Stick with the site for a year and you'll have a do-it-yourself Master's degree in sustainability. And you'll have a personal plan for how to help green the planet. If you’re new to the site at any time during the year, just start with the first lessons from the archive.
